India women’s cricket team will likely return to international action for the first time since last year’s T20 World Cup when they take on South Africa in limited-overs series at home from March 7. According to the Press Trust of India, Lucknow or Kanpur will host the 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs, as scheduled in bio-bubble environments.

A 22-member India squad has been picked for the 2 limited-overs series even as the fixtures for the tour is yet to be announced but Cricket South Africa confirmed on Monday that the senior national women’s team will leave for India this week, the report said.

“The COVID tests have been done, the team is ready to leave anytime,” a BCCI official told the news agency.Both teams will have to undergo a six-day quarantine which means they will get a week of training before the series opener. Since the series will have to be played in a bio-bubble, the team needs to assemble at least two weeks before the first game with six days reserved for quarantine.

“Getting match ready will be a challenge for Indian players but the most important thing that the series is finally happening. The players needed this badly,” said the BCCI official.

The series was earlier supposed to be held at the Greenfield Sports Hub Stadium in Thiruvanthapuram but Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) expressed its inability to stage the matches as stadium owners had a booked an Army recruitment drive on the same dates,

Notably, India have not played international cricket since March 8, 2020 wherein they played Australia in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India women’s cricketers featured in the 4-match Women’s T20 Challenge in Sharjah in November 2020 but they had to wait for close to a year for international action to resume.
