Just a day after the draining and fighting draw in the 3rd Test in Sydney, India have begun their preparations for the series finale in Brisbane. India players had their first training session at the iconic Gabba on Wednesday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to social media to share photos from the training session. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane and others were seen in their training kits.
Head coach Ravi Shastri, who was keeping a close watch on the proceedings, addressed the team huddle. Shastri was also seen having an intense discussion with the rest of the support staff, which includes bowling coach Bharat Arun, batting coach Vikram Rahtour and fielding coach R Sridhar.
Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar were also part of the training session. Notably, Shardul is likely to replace Jasprit Bumrah if the senior pacer is ruled out due to the abdominal strain he picked up during the Sydney Test.
However, Jasprit Bumrah was spotted with the rest of the team during the training session. Bumrah though wasn’t seemingly in his training kits but was having a discussion with Shardul and the bowling coach. India Today reported on Tuesday that Team India is not willing to risk Bumrah for the 4th Test, despite the series being leveled at 1-1.
With Ravindra Jadeja ruled out with a fractured thumb and Hanuma Vihari picking up a hamstring tear, it remains to be seen what are the changes India would be making for the 4th Test. Mayank Agarwal also suffered an injury during training and he was taken to scans on Tuesday. If Mayank is unavailable, India are likely to play Prithvi Shaw at No. 3 while tweaking the batting order a bit.
India have been jolted by a series of injuries which started even before the tour began as Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were ruled out. Rohit Sharma did not recover in time for the limited-overs series from a hamstring injury but returned to take the field for the 3rd Test in Sydney.
India lost Mohammed Shami in the 1st Test with a fractured elbow and Umesh Yadav in the 2nd Test with a strain. Reserve opener KL Rahul was also ruled out before the 3rd Test as he picked up an injury while training.
With injury scares to both Bumrah and R Ashwin, India are in a spot of bother in the lead up to the Brisbane Test.
The tourists have also had to deal with off-field issues after arriving in Brisbane as they weren’t happy about the facilities that were on offer at the team hotel. While they are not allowed to leave the floor, Indian players were unhappy about the lack of housekeeping and training facilities, including gym and swimming pool.
Also, India squad members have been put in “strictest quarantine” at their Brisbane team hotel after a case of novel coronavirus in Queensland has been found to be the highly-contagious UK strain. All those cases have been traced to nearby quarantine hotel.
the news of the cases linked to the Grand Chancellor Hotel, which is located close to the Indian team hotel, has come as a fresh concern in the lead up to the 4th Test.
